Psychopathology of Paul Schreber and His Father
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
Most psychoanalytic investigators have been indifferent to the Schreber case since Freud¡¯s work was published. I understand their reasons for neglecting Schreber because most analysts who adhere to the teachings of Freud are primarily interested in studying neuroses, such as the "like father, like son" phenomenon, and they recognize that many psychologically minded-clinicians do not accept Freud¡¯s dynamic view on psychotic disorders. Thus, the Schreber case has been forgotten in the field of psychoanalysis. In the present study, I review the Schreber case and emphasize the father-son relationship, the post-Freudian concepts of mother-child relationships, and the merits and demerits of Freud¡¯s work, including his fallacy. I am very impressed with Schreber¡¯s record and deeply sympathetic to his painful and traumatic childhood experiences. His delusional confessions were full of symbolic meaning, which was indicative of his early psychic trauma and conflicts.
